University Reconfiguration, Rebranding and Website Development Oversite

As the senior creative professional and most experienced marketing leader in the university, I participated in an advisory role for a team that included various campus marketing managers and the VC of Marketing.  My leadership significantly contributed to the team’s successful transition of five websites to one while rebranding the university.

I was also responsible for crafting Google ad programs and their respective landing pages, and acted in an oversight advisory role for the University’s promotional initiatives.

I mentored the team of younger marketing managers, instructing them on landing page and SEO best practices, and lifestyle marketing.

Received a citation by the Chancellor for the work I accomplished to help the university through challenging times.

Team Building & Mentoring, Rebranding and Creative Template Development

Lead the creative with a focus on strategic marketing for all state and national marketing initiatives across web, print advertising, direct mail, and event marketing programs for all product lines.

Identified need to strengthen the umbrella corporate brand and led initiatives achieving an across-the-board upgrade to the quality and consistency of branding.

Directed and mentored a staff of five graphic designers and two copy writers.

Introduced the use of social networking and viral marketing to drive web visits and prospect inquiries, leading to the development of their youtube channel which became a highly successful lead generator.

Led the creative for opt-in email blast campaigns resulting in significant sales leads.

Identified amazon.com as a challenging factor in year-over-year decreases in sales for their publishing division, which led to a restructuring of the division.

Conceived of a “Program-finder” app to guide school administrators to the program offerings that best fit their needs, while also generating sales leads for the organization.

Website Refresh and Expansion Lead to Increased Web Traffic and Increased Brand Awareness

This post-graduate healthcare professional training event promotor had seen a significant drop-off in website traffic and a subsequent decline in event attendance.

I oversaw the redesign of the main hub websites, and international event sites, while managing the rewrite of content, establishment of an online newsletter, and an expansion of an online video library. As a result, the traffic exploded to 30% more visits than the previous record high.

Marketing Creative for Two New Health Centers Including Award-Winning Direct Mail and Broadcast Advertising

Oversaw the promotion of the new cancer center and joint replacement center, resulting in two Tele awards for the TV campaigns I wrote and directed. I also won Lamplighter Marketing award for a direct mail piece welcoming newbies to the region.

Designed Three Award-Winning Toy Lines and Art Directed All Print and Web Marketing, Packaging and Trade Show Booth Design.

Was the art director and principal designer for three toy lines, one of which “went viral”, selling millions of units. Toy Awards included: Openheimer, Parenting Magazine, and Dr. Toy.

Directed all creative in the company and managed on-staff designers and freelancers.

Brought in as a Hired Gun

Brookstone had recently lost its creative leadership. The acting CD brought me in to help with packaging, store signage, and web banner ads.  I was later credited by the him for “saving the holiday season”.

Vernon is one of the most talented graphic artists I’ve ever known.
He’s an excellent designer, with remarkable creative instincts and outstanding skills from conception to detailed execution. Vernon has great technical expertise, with invaluable knowledge about hardware, software, photography, paper, and printing. Vernon is skilled at creating art in variety of formats (books, brochures, catalogs, 3D merchandise, CDs, Web, etc.) for variety of audiences. He’s a perfectionist, holding himself and vendors to the highest standards. Yet he’s also acutely sensitive to budget and time constraints and knows how to compromise without jeopardizing key goals. He has a sound grasp of marketing and corporate concerns, which brings a level of sophistication and focus to his work and helps him create pieces that produce results. Vernon is an artist by trade and, just as importantly, by interest. He’s an encyclopedia of styles and techniques, and that knowledge has enriched his designs numerous times. Vernon is a total pro who’s easy to work with: Very bright, quick, patient, dedicated, personable, enthusiastic, eager to learn, highly ethical, and a true team player.

Beth Obermiller
Former Executive VP, Kid Galaxy

Creative, out-of-the-box thinker, Vernon was a valuable member of our marketing team. His ability to develop creative strategies that positioned our products and services in clever and creative ways was an asset to our organization. Vernon is not only an outstanding designer/artist/photographer but is also a strong marketer understanding the challenges and demands of building a successful business.

Kendra Fowler
Former Marketing Director, Staff Development for Educators

He is also highly collaborative and always willing to work closely with others to achieve shared goals.
Vernon is an outstanding professional with exceptional skills in marketing and engagement, as well as a natural talent for design. During his time at Antioch, Vernon demonstrated his commitment to the university by leading the creation of the Antioch Alumni website. This project was instrumental in increasing engagement and fundraising abilities within the Antioch Alumni community, and it would not have been possible without Vernon's leadership and expertise. Vernon's ability to develop and execute marketing strategies is impressive. He has an eye for detail and a strong understanding of how to leverage design to enhance engagement and build lasting relationships with alumni and other key stakeholders. He is also highly collaborative and always willing to work closely with others to achieve shared goals.

Michael J. Metcalf
Former Marketing Manager, Antioch University

Vernon was a pleasure to work with, and was always very responsive to any request I had. In my time at Antioch University New England admissions he was receptive, gave suggestions for a way to format something on the web at Antioch that I hadn't even thought of, and overall helped us promote Antioch's mission and values to prospective students. I'd highly recommend him for a future position.

Laura Andrews
Antioch University Director of Institutional Advancement

Vernon was passionately committed to creative excellence and to connecting his creative energy with the strategic direction of SDE. His ability to design unique and distinctive materials was matched with the insight to leverage a single idea multiple times across multiple venues and media.

Dave West
Former Vice President, Staff Development for Educators

For several years we tried — and failed — to find someone to redesign our website in such a way that it would reflect the mission of our organization as a center for adult education. After three failed attempts, we finally approached Vernon Thornblad and invited him to try his hand at crafting an entirely new “look”. Vernon worked in close consultation with us, providing that rare mixture of careful listening and clear direction. And so it was that, in a matter of months, our new website took shape in a way all of us could support and admire. Since the roll-out of our new website, which has been widely received with warm approbation, Vernon has helped us to build out new features of the site as well as find new ways to upgrade its visibility and technical prowess and he has done so with patience, goodwill, practical sense, and a willingness to keep costs under control despite working in a profession where spiraling prices are as common as newly rising skyscrapers in Manhattan or Mumbai.

Douglas Gerwin, PhD
Executive Director, Center for Anthroposophy

Vern is an extremely creative person who brings his many years of experience to the table. Many of his new designs for direct mail pieces and brochures brought the existing level of design up several notches. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to contribute across many mediums (print design, web, photography, and video).

Dave Weisberg
Former Online Marketing Manager, Staff Development for Educators

Truth be told: If I had my own business, I would hire Vernon as my Creative Director in a heartbeat.

As Marketing Director of Just Pretend, Kid Galaxy and then Dolls Unlimited, I worked with Vernon on a number of projects. At Just Pretend, our task was to repackage and reposition Stardust Classics, a collection of dolls and books based on fairytale characters. Challenged by an insane deadline and a complete redo, Vernon’s leadership, focus and inspirational vision ultimately captured the essence of the line and set the stage for acclaim and marketplace success. The collection launched to garner such awards as Parents Magazine’s Best Toy of the Year, a Teacher’s Choice featured finalist, and Associated Press’ Best Toy of the Year. This secured the line’s position as a winner with key retail buyers and consumers. Weathering the challenges of any start-up, fast-paced environment, Vernon successfully and enthusiastically launched and positioned a new company, division and several product collections. He was always a source of encouragement and foresight and juggled numerous projects with ease. One of Vernon’s most valuable and unique leadership qualities is his ability to take many opinions and diplomatically shape them into one focused and successful creative vision. Vernon is well respected, talented, kind and highly professional. Truth be told: If I had my own business, I would hire Vernon as my Creative Director in a heartbeat.
